Since its introduction in 1982, people say the J/22 is the best sailing boat they've ever been on. It's responsive, stable, and safe, as much fun to single-hand with main only as it is to plane under spinnaker in 18 knots of wind. There are over 1,500 J/22s now sailing in 65 active fleets in eighteen countries on three continents.

Our two J/22s, Otto and Carolyn, are located on mooring balls just off Columbia’s dock in Monroe Harbor.  They are the core of our Adult Keelboat education and racing program, and also available for rentals. They have a comfortable self-bailing cockpit with 7 ft. long seats and room for 4-5 people for daysailing.  At 1,800 pounds, they’re light enough to be effective in light air when the big cruising boats are bobbing up and down.  Yet with a 700 pound keel, they’re safe (and, in fact, exhilarating) to sail in a big northerly breeze.

The rental rate is $50 per hour, with a two hour minimum.  Renters must be Club members or graduates of our US Sailing Basic Keelboat Class and demonstrate to staff that they are capable of safely operating the boat.  At least one crew must be over the age of 18.

With our busy teaching and racing schedule, the boats book up early.  So contact us soon if you’re interested in renting.

Stand-up Paddle Boarding, or SUP, is a hybrid of Surfing and Kayaking.  Like a kayak, you use paddle on either side with a single bladed paddle.  Like surfing, you stand! Reportedly invented by Polynesians, the sport has seen a revival in the last 15 years across the globe. New technology has provided for equipment that is lighter, stronger, faster, safer and easier to operate.

SUP use has expanded into a variety of uses:

  • SUP is a family and socially friendly activity.  It’s not uncommon to see the Columbia boards manned by couples, groups or parents and their kids.  Harbor tour, anyone?

  • SUP is terrific exercise.  Many professional athletes are using SUP to augment their exercise routine in a low impact manner.

  • SUP yoga is becoming quite popular.

We currently have four SUPs for rent.  Call the Club to learn more about our Boards and we can select the right one for you.  Users must be 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult.

The Club 420 Class Dinghy is a double-handed (2 crew) monohull planing dinghy with centerboard, a sloop rig, and center sheeting. The boats are equipped with spinnakers and trapezes for flat out racing.  The 420 was also designed specifically to be easier to handle than its larger higher-performance cousin, the 470.  These are one of the most popular and competitive racing boats in the US for boat young adults and adults.

Columbia has a fleet of fifteen 420s.  You see them on the water almost every day of the week from March through December.  When they’re not being used by our youth programs, they’re available for members to rent by the hour.  Some members just like to the feeling of sailing a small, responsive and fast dinghy.  Others recruit a few friends and form an impromptu race.  If you’re interested in the latter, let us know and we can place a few drop marks for you.

Members can rent the 420s at $20 per hour, and Sunday races are $10 per head.  Non-members can rent if they participate in any of our sailing classes.  Pricing varies
