It's an exciting time to race Wednesday nights in The Chicago Beer Can Series! There have been some questions surrounding the new format for The Chicago Beer Can Series. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:
Q: How much does it cost to enter?
A: Registration for the Chicago Beer Can Series is only $75; that's less than $5/race!
Q: That seems very affordable. What are the other fees to race?
A: There are no additional fees by/from the Organizing Authority Columbia Yacht Club. Registering for the Chicago Beer Can Series means that you are eligible to race, be scored and receive prizes just like any other regatta.
Q: So does this mean that I'll be scored against everyone?
A: Yes! You will be scored against every boat in your section regardless of club/organization affiliation. Weekly prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each section.
Q: Who will be racing on the inshore course?
A: The inshore course is designed for the smaller one designs currently Colgate 26's, 420's and Laser are participating on the inshore course.
Q: Will there be racing before/after the Race to Mackinac?
A: There will be no racing July 12-19.
Q: Where will awards be presented?
A: Weekly overall awards will be presented at Columbia Yacht Club. Other organizations/clubs may choose to do weekly awards for their own fleets. You should contact your respective organization for more information. End of season awards will be presented at the annual Boater's Bash, of which details are still being worked on.
Q: I have never been on a boat, how do I get involved?
A: There are many ways to get involved with no experience, without a boat, or limited in funds. The Columbia Sailing School offers comprehensive lessons, and will work with you after class to get involved in local racing.
If you are not sure sailing is for you but you would like to be on the water learning and part of the community, Race Committee is a FREE way to get on the water! Columbia Yacht Club is always in need of extra hands to run races. If you give us your time and effort, we will educate you, as well as get you involved socially on and off the water.
