What exactly is a Skipjack? Register HERE
Well, if you are on the east coast, it is an oyster boat. If you are on the west coast, it is a type of tuna. But here in the Midwest, a Skipjack at Columbia Yacht Club is someone who loves fun, being on the water and learning to sail. Skipjacks is a unique program that combines both classroom and on-the-water sessions for those who are interested in learning to sail.
The eight-week session begins in early May with classes held every Tuesday night, starting at 6:30 P.M. For the on-the-water weeks, it is recommended to arrive closer to 6:00 P.M. The first two weeks are spent in the classroom, with five weeks being out on the water on the boats of volunteer skippers. The final night of the course is the annual "Skipjacks Bash," celebrating new skills, new friends and, sometimes, new Club members.
The course provides a perfect introduction to the sport for adults who may not yet have the time to commit to our adult sailing course, but who want to get a basic understanding of sailing. If you have any friends or family who have not wanted to jump right into sailing classes, Skipjacks is a great way to have them dip their toes in the water and become involved in the sport.
The eight-week series includes-

For Columbia Yacht Club members, Skipjacks offers those who are already familiar with sailing a chance to become more involved in the Club and meet other members. The Skipjacks program is always in need volunteers to help in the classroom with activities such as knot tying, points of sail, terminology and all other things nautical. When you volunteer, you not only can share your experience and love of sailing with others, it's also a good refresher before the cruising and racing seasons start.
